French Fauvist Painter and Sculptor, 1869-1954 Henri Matisse is considered the most important French artist of the 20th century and, along with Pablo Picasso, one of the most influential modernist painters of the last century. Matisse began studying drawing and painting in the 1890s. A student of the masters of Post-Impressionism, Matisse later made a reputation for himself as the leader of a group of painters known as Les Fauves. An ironic label given to them by a critic, the name reflected Matisse's aggressive strokes and bold use of primary colors. In 1905 Matisse gained sudden fame with three paintings, including Woman with the Hat, purchased by the wealthy American ex-patriot Gertrude Stein. Beyond painting, he worked with lithographs and sculpture, and during World War II he did a series of book designs. Later in his career he experimented with paper cutouts and designed decorations for the Dominican chapel in Vence, France. edward hopper
American painter, printmaker and illustrator. He was brought up in a town on the Hudson River, where he developed an enduring love of nautical life. When he graduated from Nyack Union High School in 1899, his parents, although supportive of his artistic aspirations, implored him to study commercial illustration rather than pursue an economically uncertain career in fine art. He studied with the Correspondence School of Illustrating in New York City (1899-1900). He continued to study illustration at the New York School of Art (1900-1906), under Arthur Keller (1866-1925) and Frank Vincent Du Mond (1865-1951), but began to study painting and drawing after a year. Hopper began in the portrait and still-life classes of William Merrit Chase, to whose teaching he later referred only infrequently and disparagingly. He preferred the classes he took with Kenneth Hayes Miller and especially those of Robert Henri. Hopper s skill won his fellow students respect, as well as honours in the school where, by 1905, he was teaching Saturday classes.
Antoine Vollon
(April 23, 1833 - August 27, 1900) was a French realist artist, best known as a painter of still lifes, landscapes and figures. During his lifetime, Vollon was a successful celebrity, enjoyed an excellent reputation, and was called a "painter's painter".
Ivan Nikitin
Russian Painter, ca.1680-1742,Russian painter. The son of a Moscow priest who was close to the imperial court, Nikitin probably studied at the workshop of the Armoury Palace in Moscow and subsequently worked chiefly in St Petersburg. His early portraits were of Peter the Great and members of Peter family, for example the portraits of Peter daughters Elizabeth (St Petersburg, Rus. Mus.) and Anne (Moscow, Tret yakov Gal.) and of his sister Natal ya Alekseyevna (St Petersburg, Rus. Mus.). One of the few signed and dated works is a portrait of Praskov ya Ioannovna, Daughter of Tsar Ivan V (1714; St Petersburg, Rus. Mus.). Nikitin style was formed at the time of Peter the Great reforms of the administrative and education system in Russia, and he ranks as a pioneer of a new style in Russian painting. In his early works, up to 1716, he adapted the medieval Russian style of portraiture to the forms of contemporary European examples.
